CREATE FOR UKRAINE — an art therapy workshop using collage to provide community support, raise funds, and further awareness on the war in Ukraine.

Presented in collaboration with Kyiv Collage Collective and CUTOUT Ukrainian Contemporary Collage Festival, CREATE FOR UKRAINE was an art therapy workshop to provide community support, raise funds, and further awareness on the war in Ukraine. All proceeds were donated to the Ukrainian Army via savelife.in.ua/en/donate.

Individuals from around the world came together in a “virtual studio” to create. Participants were able to:

Practice mindfulness and reflective writing to anchor in the “here and now.”
Create collage art in order to process shared feelings and responses.
Connect with others in discussion through the artwork within an open space.

“I thought about how unjust and criminal Russia's desire to occupy my country is while creating this collage. This isn’t the first time in our history. During its existence, Russia has always tried to deprive the Ukrainian people of their identity and freedom, to swallow them up. I felt that I wanted to create a collage black and white, without using any colors. However, when I finished it, I wanted to add red - the color of resistance and struggle!

Now Ukraine is stronger and more consolidated than ever before. We all feel here the huge support of the civilized world and also the support of our ancestors, who just as courageously defended Ukrainian land from the Russian’s hundreds of years ago.

“I feel like a victim of a powerful abuser now. Russia is bombing my cities - and in a few minutes there is news in its media that Ukraine is bombing itself. The Russian soldiers rap and kill Ukrainian women and children near Kyiv, and Russian bloggers say it is all about acting on camera.

The Russian’s claim that they have started a war on my land and are dropping bombs on me to save me from the fictional nazis, who don’t exist at all. And this constant gaslighting has been going on for two months now. But I know the truth! I see everything with my own eyes and hear everything with my own ears, I believe in real life, not the tales of sick abusers.
